ROCK SCALING

Rock scaling serves as the initial step in slope work, often proving sufficient in ensuring slope safety. It is crucial to engage highly skilled rock remediation technicians for this particular task, particularly when operating in close proximity to private or public utilities, infrastructure, or buildings. The scaling process should always begin from the top and progress downward. Manual rock scaling is conducted by proficient rope access technicians utilizing pry bars, inflatable air bags, air tools, and nonexplosive rock breaking techniques. These experts are capable of dislodging perilous overhanging boulders, slabs, and unstable rock formations.

SERVICES FOR PREVENTING ROCKFALL AND THE USE OF ROCKFALL DRAPE SYSTEMS

In order to effectively control rockfall, a slope drape system makes use of various products such as wire mesh, cable netting, and ring nets. The first step in installing a slope drape is to place anchors on the top of the slope. Once the wire rope cable is set up, the drape material is securely fastened to the top cable and draped across the slope. In some cases, it may be necessary to overlap the rows of drape material to ensure complete coverage, which are then secured together. While a slope drape cannot completely stop rocks from falling, it does hinder their downward momentum by preventing them from gaining energy. In situations where there is no designated rockfall landing area, the slope drape material is anchored in place using a pattern of rock bolting. Slope drapes are used to cover large areas of unstable rock. In each corner of every panel, the slope netting can be either draped or bolted, depending on the specific requirements. Slope netting is employed when the unstable rocks are large and blocky, but not large enough to require bolting as the sole option. There are various types of mesh and rockfall drapes available, including cable nets, double twist, 3mm and 4mm tecco mesh, rolled cable nets, and ring nets, among others.

SLOPE STABILIZATION AND LANDSLIDE REPAIR

The technique known as soil nailing is utilized for the purpose of stabilizing soil slopes or cuts, and it bears resemblance to the process of rock bolting. To commence, specific depth holes are drilled into the slope, wherein a thread bar composed of grade 75 or grade 150 steel is subsequently inserted alongside centralizers to ensure its centralized position. The space surrounding the bar is then filled with cement grout. In order to stabilize the slope face, certain materials are affixed with the aid of the soil nails. This method finds widespread application in heavy civil/roadway construction, as well as in commercial building excavations or rectifying stability issues in existing slopes. The design of soil nail slope stabilization is highly reliant on the geology, necessitating thorough subsurface investigations and meticulous analysis of the gathered data with the assistance of seasoned professionals. Presented below are some of the materials commonly employed on the slope face in conjunction with soil nailing:

    •    Shotcrete, which can be applied either wet or dry

    •    Wire mesh, ranging from 3 mm to 4 mm in size

    •    Gabion baskets

    •    Large retaining wall blocks
